January 07, 2010

Edward Esdaile ?1815 - 1867 was a British Banker who was on the Management Committee (George Atkin, (ed.) The British and Foreign Homeopathic Medical Directory and Record. (Groombridge & Sons, 1853). In 1858, Edward Esdaile was convicted of major banking fraud (unsecured loans to himself and friends and family (Anon, The Bankers’ Magazine, Volume 18, (BPC (Bankers’ Magazine) Ltd., 1858). Page 286) - a common banking practice at the time) and sentenced to a year in prison,

Cothelstone Manor, the family seat, was rebuilt by Edward Esdaile in 1856-7,

In 1791 the estate, which consisted of 11 farmhouses, 54 cottages and two dwelling houses, was purchased by Edward Jeffries (died 1814). It was passed down through his family to his grandson, Edward Jeffries Esdaile (died 1867), who married the daughter of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (this was actually Edward Jeffries Esdaile who died in 1881). Esdaile built Cothelstone House as a new residence between 1817 and 1820 (which Esdaile was this). This building was demolished around 1962. (Edward?) Esdaile also rebuilt the old manor house in 1855-1856, to the style in which the Stawell’s had lived before the Civil War.

Of interest:

James Esdaile (1808-1859), the eldest son of the Rev. James Esdaile and Margaret Blair, was born on 6 February 1808 in Montrose, Angus, Scotland, is a notable figure in the history of mesmerism. ?James Esdaile was a relative of Edward Esdaile,

*Sir James Esdaile 1777-1778, Knighted in 1766, Lord Mayor of London   - there is a lot of confusion here as Sir James had two sons, both called Edward Jeffries Esdaile:

Sir James and Mary had, among others, another son, William Esdaile, who married Elizabeth Jeffries. They had a son Edward Jeffries Esdaile, who married Eliza Drake. They had a son Edward Jeffries Esdaile, who married Eliza Drake. Their son, another Edward Jeffries Esdaile, married Ianthe Eliza Shelley, only child of Percy Bysshe Shelley, the poet…
